AI sentiment analysis classifies evaluations expressed in text, for example as positive, negative or neutral under a defined scheme. For a company, it can organise reviews, open-ended survey responses and support messages. A useful result shows what is being discussed, which evaluation is expressed and what needs checking.

A single dashboard colour can lose the important part of a message. A customer can praise installation and criticise delivery in the same sentence. A neutral question can require urgent intervention. A high confidence score for a label does not measure how satisfied its author actually is. To place this language task within an application's architecture, see the types of artificial intelligence and how they relate.

The guide's examples and calculations are original demonstrations, without results attributed to a customer. Photographs show analysis work, a communication channel and laptop-based work; they do not depict a sentiment-analysis tool installed at a company. Diagrams explain both the mechanism and how conclusions are checked.

What is sentiment analysis, and which output does it produce?

A label concerns the text and target being analysed

Sentiment analysis is a language-classification task. A model may evaluate an entire message, a sentence or an aspect of a mentioned product. A project must specify its analysis unit. A sentence label does not automatically extend to the entire conversation or the author's commercial relationship with the company.

Within NLP applications for business, sentiment differs from extracting an organisation, classifying a topic or identifying a request. These functions can be combined, but have separate fields and evaluation criteria. A report must let readers see what was actually classified.

The label scheme is part of the project

  1. Positive

A favourable evaluation expressed about the specified target.

  2. Negative

An unfavourable evaluation expressed about that target.

  3. Neutral

Information without polarity under the defined scheme and context.

  4. Mixed

Opposing opinions retained separately when the scheme supports them.

  5. Needs review

Insufficient context or a case outside the scheme; not another word for neutral.

Demonstrative project scheme, not a mandatory output list for every model. Review state is separate from the sentiment label.

Some systems use only two classes; others include neutral or mixed. In our proposed scheme, “needs review” is retained separately. This describes a review process, not another emotion. An ambiguous message is not automatically pushed into the neutral category merely to complete the chart's distribution.

Sentiment, intent and satisfaction: which differences matter?

A negative message is not automatically a cancellation request

Sentiment describes the evaluation expressed in text. Operational intent concerns what the author requests: information, replacement, booking or another action. Directly measured satisfaction comes from a defined question and scale. AI labels are not converted into survey responses the person never supplied.

In our demonstrative scenario, “I cannot find the manual; could you send it?” contains a clear need without requiring a conclusion about the customer's relationship with the company. The application can identify the documentation topic and sending request. An operator checks whether the material is available rather than responding solely to a sentiment colour.

This separation also helps prioritisation. Problem severity, a contractual deadline and service interruption are not inferred from tone alone. A calm message can describe an important problem. Intervention policy uses process-relevant fields, with sentiment analysis remaining one available information source.

Aspect-based analysis: one review can praise and criticise

Link the evaluation to the component being discussed

Aspect-based sentiment analysis identifies the evaluated element and associated polarity. SemEval research on this task separates identifying aspects from evaluating them. This distinction retains different opinions within a message instead of hiding them behind one average.

One message, two aspects and an action to review

  1. Demonstrative message

Delivery was late, but the installation instructions were very clear.

  2. Delivery · negative

The complaint concerns delivery time, not every service component.

  3. Instructions · positive

The praise concerns clarity of installation material.

  4. Operational action

The operator checks the request and history. A label does not itself approve a refund.

Original invented teaching text, not a real review. Aspect, sentiment and action have separate fields.

In our example, delivery and instructions receive different evaluations. For useful analysis, we propose separate fields for message, aspect, label and the supporting text span. Review that span in context. Dissatisfaction is not attributed to the whole product when the message only discusses transport time.

Operational topics are established with the company: delivery, installation, support, documentation or billing, as appropriate. A new aspect can go to review. Labels are not automatically added without definitions, because the same situation could then enter different categories and artificially change the reported trend.

How do we choose the label scheme?

Write borderline-case rules before evaluation

The annotation guide specifies what is analysed, which target an evaluation concerns and what each class means. It includes original examples of neutral, mixed and insufficient-context messages. Two evaluators should explain a disagreement using the same rule, rather than personal preference alone.

For multi-sentence feedback, establish whether to report an overall label or several aspects. “Positive about support, negative about delivery” is not automatically neutral. If the available model has no mixed class, the application can retain sentence-level or aspect-level outputs according to the tested method.

Supervised models learn from labelled examples, and their labels have an application scope. Our comparison of machine-learning approaches explains the training signal's role. A binary model evaluated on reviews in another language does not automatically acquire all the company's classes and conventions.

We propose a label dictionary with definitions, examples and version. If the company later separates installation from documentation, identify the new scheme and effective period. Earlier reports retain their original meaning. A renamed or split category is not presented as a change in customer opinions, because the counting instrument itself has changed.

What do we check in Romanian, sarcasm and mixed messages?

Declared language support does not replace testing on the process's messages

The evaluation set must include wording actually used: with and without diacritics, abbreviations, negation, common errors and technical terminology. Select these from authorised data and annotate under the guide. Synthetic examples help explain a rule but do not replace coverage of variation encountered in use.

Sarcasm requires attention to context. “Wonderful, the document has disappeared again” is not classified solely by its first word. The pilot checks whether the model preserves the message's meaning and when it requests review. Do not attribute access to voice tone or earlier conversation if input contains only that sentence.

For long texts, what reaches the input matters. Truncation can remove the crucial condition or negation at the end. Our guide to the context window and information organisation explains this boundary. Retain the processed unit and segmentation method so that the result can be reconstructed.

How do we prepare a reference set and a separate test?

Manual review needs rules and records

Select messages representative of the project's channels and period, with the rights needed for the defined purpose. Remove duplicates under a documented rule and retain exceptions separately. Define whether one conversation can appear as several messages and how that affects counting.

Preparing evaluation in the customers' language

  1. 1 · Purpose

Define the decision supported by analysis and eligible messages.

  2. 2 · Annotation guide

Specify unit, aspects, labels and ambiguity handling.

  3. 3 · Reference set

Select and manually review representative cases using authorised data.

  4. 4 · Separate test

Compare output with reference without silently adjusting criteria.

  5. 5 · Review

Analyse errors by class, language, channel and configuration.

Proposed pilot workflow. Not a public Romanian benchmark; it does not assume every multilingual model covers all these cases.

Reference labels are reviewed by people familiar with the language and domain. When interpretations differ, retain the reason and resolution rule. Cases used to adjust the prompt or threshold are not then presented as an independent test of the same configuration. Datasets and versions have distinct identifiers.

For the test record, we propose an internal case identifier without the person's name in the working report. A link to the source, when needed, remains in a restricted-access area. Evaluators can check text and necessary context without automatically receiving the whole commercial profile. Also define when evaluation copies are deleted or updated.

Preparation for data protection in AI integration establishes necessary information and access to original messages. Presentations use invented examples rather than screenshots containing customers' personal data. The source record defines collection method, purpose, permitted readers and retention period, including for publicly visible comments.

How do we measure errors: precision, recall and a confusion matrix?

Check each class, not only the overall proportion of correct answers

A confusion matrix compares reference and predicted labels. For our binary example, all other labels are temporarily grouped outside the negative class. This simplification checks negative-case identification, not the full distinction between positive, neutral and mixed. Axis labels show exactly how to read the matrix.

Demonstrative matrix: negative or other labels

  1. Reference negative · predicted negative

16 messages: the negative label is correctly identified.

  2. Reference negative · predicted otherwise

4 messages: negative cases missed by the classifier.

  3. Reference other labels · predicted negative

3 messages: false alarms for the negative label.

  4. Reference other labels · predicted otherwise

17 messages: correctly outside the negative class, without assessing its subclasses.

40 invented messages: rows = reference, columns = prediction. Negative precision 16/19 ≈ 84.2%; negative recall 16/20 = 80%; binary accuracy 33/40 = 82.5%. Not real results.

Among the 40 invented messages, the model marks 19 as negative, with 16 correctly identified. Negative precision is 16/19, approximately 84.2%. Of the 20 reference-negative messages, it finds 16, giving 80% recall. Binary accuracy is 33/40, or 82.5%. These calculations are not statistics about a product or customer.

Choose a threshold for a use case and check it on separate data

If analysis helps operators find messages to review, missed cases and false alarms have different costs. Changing a threshold changes the selection reaching the operator. Choose it using the adjustment set, then verify results on a separate test. Do not assume one universal value suits every channel.

Readers must distinguish scores. Confidence in a label is not sentiment intensity. Other systems may supply a polarity score or an aggregate measure of evaluative content. Use the actual output definition, rather than directly comparing numbers produced by different methods or turning them into percentages of personal happiness.

How do we build a dashboard that preserves meaning?

Show period, channel and denominator alongside the distribution

The report shows collected messages, eligible messages and exclusions. Choose the unit: message, conversation or distinct respondent, according to purpose and available data. A customer sending several messages is not automatically counted as several customers. Interpret a trend for its defined source.

The denominator changes a dashboard's meaning

  1. 100 · collected

Messages from the period and channel defined in this separate scenario.

  2. 80 · eligible

20 are excluded under declared rules rather than hidden in the calculation.

  3. 24 · negative

Cases labelled negative among the 80 eligible messages.

  4. 30% · of eligible

24/80 = 30%. Not 30% of every customer of the company.

Second teaching scenario, independent of the 40-message matrix. Figures are fictional; source coverage and exclusions appear alongside the distribution.

In the separate scenario, 24 negative messages among 80 eligible ones produce 30%. This is the percentage of eligible messages labelled negative, not every customer. The dataset differs from the 40-message matrix and is not a real result. Charts must retain that distinction in their title and description.

When comparing periods, check channel changes, volume and inclusion rules. An increase in negative feedback after opening a new channel may reflect a different message composition. We propose filtering by aspect and channel, with controlled access to supporting examples. A chart alone does not establish the cause of change.

Separate classification quality from feedback distribution in the interface. The first comes from a test with reviewed reference labels; the second describes messages processed during a period. Negative-feedback percentage is not the model's error rate. Presenting the panels alongside each other with complete labels helps the team understand both the commercial signal and verification of the method producing it.

How do we use output without inappropriate automatic decisions?

In a pilot, sentiment can guide topic review and worklist organisation. To reply to the customer, the operator reads the request and relevant history. A negative label does not approve a refund, cancellation or subscription change. The action follows its own application rules and roles.

Text classification is not used as a diagnosis of personal emotions or an automatic employee assessment. This guide concerns product and service feedback analysis with verifiable evidence. Define accepted uses and who can review a wrong classification or a case lacking sufficient context.

The guide to aligning AI application objectives and controls explains separating indicators from outcomes and permissions. Sentiment distribution informs the process. Request resolution has separate evidence and status, neither inferred from model wording.

Which components make up a feedback-analysis application?

The proposed workflow includes authorised collection, language identification, preparation, classification, structural validation and result display. Retain model and label-scheme versions. Messages that cannot be processed have explicit status and do not disappear from totals without explanation.

Connectors must fit the company's actual channels. An Instagram photograph illustrates a communication channel, not evidence of API access or an integration. For each source, establish permitted collection method, available data and updates. Analysis is not built on the assumption that any internet message can be collected automatically.

In a business dashboard with automated reports, visualisation connects distributions to their definitions: period, unit, aspect and coverage. Operators can review cases and retain an authorised correction. History allows version comparisons without retrospectively rewriting the meaning of earlier reports.

Which deliverables make a pilot useful?

Require the analysis purpose, source inventory, annotation guide, evaluation sets and per-class report. Include Romanian cases, mixed messages and examples requiring review. Separate demonstrations from authorised real data and identify the tested configuration, rather than supplying only a selection of successful examples.

The team must understand indicators and source access. Training through AI skills for employees includes reading the matrix, checking aspects and reporting a wrong classification. User corrections follow a procedure; they are not automatically treated as perfect retraining data.

For custom applications with AI integration, a project can connect these components to CRM and internal reporting. Define the accepted result, processing cost and maintenance. The intended gain is feedback that is easier to investigate and use within the process, measured in a pilot on agreed data.

At handover, we propose a complete review example: demonstrative message, label, aspect, evidence and authorised correction. Document what happens if input is missing or processing is interrupted. The team receives a procedure it can use and reproduce, rather than only a final chart without the definitions and steps that constructed it.

Frequently asked questions about AI sentiment analysis

Does sentiment analysis show what a customer actually feels?

It classifies the evaluation expressed in supplied text under a tested scheme. It does not replace questions addressed to the person or directly measure their internal state or survey satisfaction.

Can it work with Romanian messages?

Select a language-appropriate method and evaluate representative messages containing diacritics, negation and domain terminology. Language availability and quality within the process are checked separately.

How do we handle a message that praises and criticises?

Retain aspects and polarities separately or use a mixed class if the scheme includes it. Do not automatically equate an averaged message score with neutral information.

Does a high score mean stronger sentiment?

It depends on the output definition. Classification confidence differs from polarity and intensity. Documentation and reports specify which number is displayed and how it was validated.

Why is overall accuracy insufficient?

It can hide confused classes and important missed cases. Check the matrix, precision and recall per class, together with dataset size, language and test conditions.

What belongs beside the percentage of negative messages?

Period, source, counting unit, eligible messages and exclusions. The percentage describes that dataset and labelling method, not automatically all the company's customers.
