TikTok presented three tools that bring conversations with artificial intelligence into the purchasing process at Advertising Week New York 2026 on October 5: Shopping Assistant, Buy Direct and Lead Agent. They cover product information, payment within the app and the collection of prospective customers' contact details. Access is provided through tests for eligible merchants and advertisers, according to TikTok for Business documentation.

The announcement includes explicit regional restrictions. In its Italian release, TikTok places Buy Direct and Agentic Leads among solutions that are not yet available in Europe. Shopping Assistant is presented separately, without the same geographical qualification. Neither that presentation nor the existence of a testing programme confirms access to the assistant for every account in Romania, however; the company announces no local timetable for general availability.

Product assistance and payment use different mechanisms

Shopping Assistant appears as a conversation window on the product page within TikTok's browser. Users can request clarification before buying, and answers are based on information supplied by the merchant. The company describes questions about product features, availability, sizes and shipping, in a conversation that retains the context of previous requests and the preferences expressed by the person making the purchase.

In the flow explained by TikTok for Business, someone who decides to buy continues on the merchant's website, still open inside the app's browser. The assistant supports product selection, while the store keeps its own checkout page. This differs from Buy Direct, where payment uses a native TikTok interface without moving to the checkout on the retailer's website.

For Buy Direct, TikTok describes the use of previously saved payment methods and addresses, alongside order tracking within the app. The feature is designed for purchases directly from a brand, including purchases starting in the For You feed. The merchant remains the Merchant of Record, meaning the seller responsible for the transaction, even when the customer completes the purchase within the social platform's interface.

The integration required for Buy Direct relies on the Universal Commerce Protocol, or UCP. TikTok names Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza and Stripe among the partners with which it is building these commerce and payment experiences. The list identifies participants in development; the announcement does not establish that each integration is already available to every store using those services or that it operates in every country.

The merchant supplies the information and manages the transaction

UCP is an open standard for communication between platforms, AI agents, merchants and payment providers. Its documentation separates product searches, basket building, checkout and order management into distinct capabilities. Participating systems declare which capabilities they support, and compatible ones are selected for an interaction. A product's adoption of UCP does not automatically mean that it implements every option available in the standard.

The checkout specification provides for the exchange of ordered items, currency and amounts calculated by the merchant. It distinguishes between an incomplete session, one ready for completion and an order that has actually been placed. When the buyer needs to intervene, the flow must move to the appropriate interface. These rules describe the technical exchange of information between the platform and the store.

Under UCP's payment architecture, the platform obtains a token or encrypted payment information from a payment provider, and the merchant uses it through its own integration to collect payment. The standard therefore separates the interface used by the shopper from the system processing the transaction. Its documentation also includes mechanisms for authorising actions; the presence of a conversational assistant does not itself constitute unlimited permission to spend on a user's behalf.

In the checkout specification's default flow, an agent preparing a purchase hands over the review of details and placement of the order to an interface where the user confirms the transaction. For other scenarios, the protocol has a separate extension for authorised payment mandates. TikTok's announcement does not state that Shopping Assistant receives a mandate to make autonomous purchases, or present the conversation as a replacement for the buyer's confirmation of the transaction.

Lead Agent collects contacts for decisions that take more time

The third tool, Lead Agent, is intended for situations where a conversation produces a commercial contact rather than an immediate order. TikTok describes its use in direct messages within the app and in interactions on an advertiser's website. The agent can answer questions, identify information relevant to qualifying an enquiry and collect contact details with appropriate consent, allowing a team to continue the discussion.

The advertiser configures a knowledge base containing approved information about the offering, frequently asked questions and eligibility criteria. It also determines which information the agent may consult and which questions are needed to assess the contact. In this model, answers must start from data entered by the organisation.

The company uses enrolment in an educational programme and choosing a car as examples of processes in which someone may have questions before speaking to a representative. The agent gathers both the contact and the context of the person's interest, information that the advertiser's team can use in the subsequent discussion.

Salesforce announces phased integrations for 2027

A more specific timetable appears in Salesforce's communication from the same day. The company says its native TikTok Shop integration for B2C Commerce will become generally available in January 2027 through Commerce Connect. It is intended to support management of the catalogue, stock, promotions and prices from a common system, with products accessible in videos, live streams and the Shop section. The date concerns Salesforce's integration, rather than the launch of TikTok Shop as a service.

For UCP-powered experiences, including Buy Direct checkout, Salesforce separately indicates a phased rollout expected to start in the first quarter of 2027. The company describes processing the transaction within Commerce Cloud infrastructure without redirecting the shopper to the retail website. The integration is designed to accept existing payment and order management systems, with support for Salesforce Payments and Salesforce Order Management out of the box.

Salesforce's roadmap also includes native synchronisation of the advertising catalogue and measurement signals through a pixel and a server-side events interface. These elements are presented as development plans. The company states that the seller retains the customer relationship and manages services after a purchase, including returns.
