OpenAI is testing a new step after a ChatGPT ad: users can choose to speak with a business-sponsored agent. This is neither an ordinary ChatGPT answer nor a feature already available to every advertiser in Romania. The September 16, 2026 announcement matters because part of the product evaluation may take place in a conversation before the customer reaches the advertiser's site.

From ad to question

A conventional ad usually asks for a click through to a website. A Sponsored Agent adds an optional step: after seeing an ad, a person can ask about the product or service, resolve doubts, and then follow a link to the business. OpenAI says this conversation is clearly labeled as sponsored, distinct from ChatGPT's independent answer, and separate from the user's original conversation.

That separation matters. When a person asks for the dimensions of a table, the terms of a subscription, or whether a service fits a particular need, the agent needs reliable company information. A good experience depends on current product data, response boundaries, and a clear next step, not merely clever ad copy.

What is available, and where

As of this article's publication, Sponsored Agents are being tested with selected advertisers in the United States. OpenAI has not said that every Romanian business can activate one. The availability of ChatGPT Ads in a market does not imply access to every format or integration.

Separately, OpenAI describes creating, updating and analyzing campaigns through natural-language requests using the Ads Manager plugin in ChatGPT. Ads Manager is adding suggestions for copy and imagery based on a landing page and campaign objective; the advertiser can review and edit them. AI-powered text customization is opt-in. These are tools for the advertiser, not the Sponsored Agent conversation seen by a customer.

HubSpot and Shopify integrations have different rollout dates

OpenAI has announced a HubSpot connection for creating campaigns, tracking performance and following up on leads with CRM context. The Shopify app is currently available to US-based merchants. International availability in markets where ChatGPT Ads operate is planned to start on September 23; on September 17 it should not be presented as an accomplished rollout.

An integration will not fix bad source data. Missing stock information, stale prices or unclear terms merely spread faster through another channel. Likewise, leads imported into a CRM without consistent source and status fields cannot support meaningful campaign analysis.

How to prepare a sponsored agent responsibly

A useful pilot begins with 20 to 30 questions real customers ask, not a prompt claiming that the agent knows everything. Identify the approved source for each answer: a product page, returns policy, contract, price list or staff member. Then decide what the agent must not invent, such as unconfirmed delivery dates, discounts or guarantees.

  • Commercial accuracy: prices, stock and terms should be maintained in the company's source of truth.
  • Conversation limits: the agent should acknowledge uncertainty and hand off to a person when approved data runs out.
  • Website handoff: the final link should lead to the product or service discussed, not an unrelated homepage.
  • Privacy: request personal data only when needed and do not assume a sponsored conversation follows every rule of a standard form.
  • Measurement: conversation volume is not sales; track qualified leads and confirmed orders.

A made-to-order furniture seller, for example, can explain materials and the quotation process but should not promise a final price before measurements. A B2B software supplier can clarify features and integrations without guaranteeing a delivery schedule for an unscoped project.

What a Romanian business can do now

Check which ChatGPT Ads functions are present in your own account, correct the offer and product information on your website, assemble the frequent questions, and define a conversion you can verify. Our ChatGPT Ads guide for Romania covers the wider channel. When a conversation must connect to a CRM, inventory or internal processes, the work also becomes a question of a custom application with AI integration, not just media buying.

Sponsored Agents may shorten the path between interest and an answer, but they can amplify inaccurate information just as quickly. The first question for an advertiser is not how to turn the agent on. It is which answers the business can substantiate, and what happens after the conversation.

A Sponsored Agent is not the company's general support bot

A support bot usually meets existing customers and needs to solve account, order or usage problems. An agent reached from an ad meets people still deciding whether a business deserves their attention. They need comparisons, limits of the offer and evidence, not a long series of slogans. The conversation should help someone choose, rather than demand a phone number immediately after the first question.

There is also an important trust boundary. The user first sees an independent ChatGPT answer, followed by a distinct advertising element. An advertiser should not describe a Sponsored Agent as a "ChatGPT recommendation" or imply that it shaped the initial answer. OpenAI explicitly says ads are separate from answers. For a brand, that transparency is a credibility requirement, not merely interface design.

One useful conversation and one risky one

Suppose someone is looking for an appointment system for a clinic. A useful conversation asks whether there is one practitioner or several, whether SMS confirmation is needed and whether bookings must sync to an existing calendar. It then identifies supported functions, what needs further scoping and the page where a quote can be requested. It does not invent a fixed price for a configurable project.

A risky conversation promises integration with "any system," guaranteed revenue growth and delivery within days without checking requirements. Even if it attracts more clicks, it creates leads with false expectations. The cost emerges later in sales and support. A pilot should therefore assess the quality of expectations created, not just the click-through rate to the website.

What we would measure in a pilot

Before launch, define a small group of products or services, a test period and a source of truth. Review the share of questions answered accurately, the number requiring human handoff, which pages people visited after the dialogue and which enquiries became qualified opportunities. Separate conversations started from confirmed orders, because a sale may continue in another channel.

It is also useful to review a sample of conversations manually while protecting personal information. That can reveal whether the agent omits important conditions or misreads a question. A report with many conversations and few complaints can still hide a problem if no one audits what the agent promises. Human oversight remains part of the product.
