Local AI security covers every component reading, retaining and transmitting data. A model may run on a business computer while the interface uses external search, document or authentication services. A controlled project identifies those paths, enforces access and tests operation under the agreed connectivity conditions.

Map data flows before configuration

Begin the inventory with user devices, interface, inference engine and document storage. Add OCR, embeddings, indexes, audio processing, tools and logs. Record execution location, data read and required connections for each. This map determines what must be installed locally for the selected business functions.

Define the operating profile: an internal service with controlled internet access or an environment without external connections. For the latter, prepare models, packages, container images and authentication in advance. Replace, locally configure or remove functions depending on external suppliers from the offline profile.

Map the local components

  1. Interface

    Accounts, conversations and selected providers.

  2. Processing

    Model, OCR, embeddings and audio.

  3. Data

    Files, indexes, logs and backups.

  4. Network

    Permitted connections and outbound rules.

Define execution location, access and retention for each component.

Restrict network and port access

When engine and application share a workstation, the engine can listen only on the local interface. Expose the application through controlled HTTPS, authentication and network rules. Access from outside the office can use an administered VPN. The firewall allows planned paths only, with recorded rules and an assigned owner.

Do not turn a development port into a public address merely to simplify connection. Check who can reach the engine, interface and administration. Test different accounts and devices, including an unapproved network. The browser interface and its underlying API must enforce the same access policy.

Configure local components explicitly

Ollama documents disabling cloud functions through OLLAMA_NO_CLOUD=1 or the corresponding configuration, followed by restart. Download the chosen model and identify it as local. Check effective settings and service logs, then run the trial through the application and account intended for work.

In Open WebUI, OFFLINE_MODE=true controls automatic downloads and application checks. Documentation separately states that it does not block configured external connections such as APIs, search or authentication services. Network isolation requires connection controls, and each selected interface provider must be checked.

Prepare documents and models before disconnecting

Download the conversational model, embeddings, OCR components and required audio models. Retain caches and directories in persistent volumes with appropriate service permissions. Test startup after restart before removing connectivity. Identify any missing-model download during preparation trials.

Docling and document interfaces offer ways to use locally prepared artefacts. Check the actual import, extraction, retrieval and answer paths. Plain-text chat can work while OCR or embeddings still need downloads. Acceptance covers every function selected for the offline environment.

Prepare an offline profile

  1. Download

    Approved artefacts and dependencies.

  2. Configure

    Local services and persistent storage.

  3. Restrict

    External connections at network level.

  4. Test

Import, retrieval, answers, audio and restart.

An interface setting does not replace network controls.

Separate users, documents and tools

Use individual accounts and least-privilege roles. Check document access before adding passages to context. Preserve rules for indexed fragments, previews and exports. When revoking an account, check associated sessions and keys as well as its removal from the user list.

Tools reading files, executing commands or modifying applications require explicit permissions and separate approvals. Treat document text as input data. Instructions found within it must not change application rights or tool lists. Test this separation with demonstration documents containing disallowed requests.

Protect storage, logs and backups

Define retained information: originals, conversations, outputs, indexes and operational data. Limit access and use encryption available in the chosen infrastructure, managing keys separately from copies. A backup restorable only by one irreplaceable person is an operational issue to resolve before handover.

Logs can retain identifiers, statuses and durations without automatically including every document and prompt. Where content records are necessary, define purpose, access and retention. Deletion follows relevant components, while restoration preserves document withdrawals and revoked access.

Access control at three points

  1. Before reading

    Identity, role and permitted documents.

  2. Before acting

    Tool, arguments and approval.

  3. During administration

    Revocation, retention and checked restoration.

Software and infrastructure enforce these controls.

Updates and tests need their own procedure

Pin engine, interface and dependency versions. Test updates in a separate environment with rollback available. In isolated environments, packages enter through an approved process and are verified before installation. Retain artefact sources and identifiers needed to recognise them.

Acceptance includes authorised and denied access, file import, retrieval, audio functions, restart and restoration. For offline profiles, check attempted external connections through network logs and controls. Record tested functions and configuration with dates and versions so assessment can be repeated.

A restart trial in the isolated environment

After preparing components, apply the network profile and restart services. Sign in as an ordinary user, import a new demonstration document and request a known fact from it. This checks extraction, embeddings and index writing as well as reading previously stored conversations. Observe whether any component requests external resources.

Next revoke the trial account and recheck the interface, API and document. Restore a backup in a separate environment and inspect restored permissions. Retain results alongside network rules and installed versions. Every new connector or tool joins the same inventory and receives a trial before activation in the isolated profile. Record the expected behaviour for each operation so another authorised administrator can repeat the assessment without relying on undocumented setup knowledge.

Questions about security and offline operation

Does installing an interface on a PC keep every data flow local?

Check providers and connections for model execution, documents, search, authentication and tools. Interface installation location describes just one component.

Is OFFLINE_MODE sufficient?

The setting controls application functions. Effective isolation requires network rules and checks of configured external services.

How should document permissions be checked?

Use accounts with different roles to test files, retrieved passages, previews and exports. Repeat after permission changes.

What should be retained for updates?

Versions, configurations, artefacts, reference tests and rollback procedures. Isolated environments also need controlled package-introduction procedures.
