YouTube is testing Ask YouTube responses directly above standard search results. The experiment announced on October 15 is live for a small group of signed-in users in the United States searching in English on desktop. Responses combine text with relevant moments from videos, while the traditional list of search results remains available further down the page.

The change introduces another entry point to conversational search: users can encounter a preview within standard results before separately opening Ask YouTube. YouTube describes the test for situations where a structured overview adds context to a question. The company names open-ended questions, explanations of how to perform an activity and topics involving the development of a skill.

The preview opens into a conversational response

People included in the experiment can expand the preview by selecting Show more. After opening the full response, they can continue with follow-up questions. Alternatively, they can scroll down to browse the videos in standard search. The test therefore preserves access to both paths within the same results page, with the user choosing whether to enter the conversation.

According to TeamYouTube’s explanation, the response appears when a structured overview can help people explore multiple angles of a topic. Its published example concerns removing marks from painted walls. The described condition is whether context is helpful for the question; the announcement does not describe replacing all video results with AI responses or activating the feature for every search.

The desktop experiment is distinct from the broader availability of the Ask YouTube interface. On October 12, the platform had announced the extension of conversational search to mobile devices, alongside web and televisions, for US viewers. The preview test subsequently adds a position within standard search for the group and conditions specified in the October 15 announcement.

Responses draw on videos and web information

The current Ask YouTube documentation explains that responses can use real-time web information and YouTube content. The presentation combines long-form videos, Shorts and text. Relevant clips can appear within it, accompanied by the video title and channel name, allowing users to identify the material from which a segment was selected and watch that video in full.

Video clips are associated with moments relevant to the question. In the documented computer experience, playback can begin at that point when a user hovers over the video. The conversation can continue through refinement suggestions or a new question. The resulting response is therefore a way of navigating between the text explanation and the selected video segments.

For clip selection, YouTube names relevance, engagement and quality among the ranking system’s priorities, as in standard search. The documentation also specifies two current exclusions: playlists and Premium-exclusive content are not eligible to appear in Ask YouTube search responses. These conditions concern the material selected by the system for inclusion within its generated search answers.

For business channels involved in social media promotion, the relevant change concerns where their video explanations can be discovered. YouTube presents Ask YouTube as an additional route for viewers to find creators’ content. Within a response, the selected segment retains a visible connection to the video title and the identity of the channel that published it.

Access differs between the experience and the experiment

The help page lists Ask YouTube availability in the United States for English searches on computers, mobile devices and televisions, with a gradual expansion to users. The feature is unavailable in the YouTube Kids app or to supervised child accounts. For televisions, the documentation explicitly excludes Apple TV devices from the search experience it describes.

On compatible televisions, a search can begin from the Home tab or Search, using a keyboard or the remote control’s microphone. Ask YouTube can open automatically for complex questions spoken aloud. This behavior within the television experience is documented separately from the standard-results preview experiment, which concerns signed-in desktop users within the designated test group.

Also on October 12, YouTube announced that its conversational feature on the watch page would expand to Shorts and live streams. That use provides context while a person watches a video. It has a different starting point from searching across videos and from the preview being tested in the results list, although all use the Ask YouTube name.

History and conversation data have their own controls

The platform collects data about Ask YouTube search use, including questions and feedback submitted about responses. Conversations can be reviewed and deleted in My Activity. Removing a topic from search-bar history deletes only the latest conversation; to manage all conversations about the same topic, the documentation directs users to the controls provided in My Activity.

YouTube states that human reviewers may examine conversations to improve the service. Before review, conversations are disconnected from the Google Account, and automated tools remove personal information such as email addresses and phone numbers. Conversations examined by reviewers are retained separately for up to three years, according to the terms published for this search experience.

Users can rate a response with the thumbs-up or thumbs-down controls and add details about their experience. The documentation also allows a preferred tone or style to be requested in the initial prompt, with further refinements during the conversation. These options concern interaction with the generated response and feedback submitted to the platform.

Regarding advertising, YouTube says these conversations are not used to show ads. The October 15 experiment concerns content discovery and the transition from standard results to a conversational response. Its current conditions remain a small group, signed-in access, desktop, the United States and English searches; Romania is outside the access area described in the announcement.
